Social benefits

If you are still in the asylum procedure, you will receive benefits under the „Asylbewerberleistungsgesetz“ (Asylum Seekers Benefits Act). Even people who have a “Duldung” (Tolerated Stay Permit) receive these benefits. The Sozialamt (Social Welfare Office) is responsible. In order to receive the benefits, you need a bank account in a German bank.

If you have a residence permit, you will receive „Arbeitslosengeld II“ (Unemployment Benefit II). You must apply for this benefit at the Jobcenter. The job center will also arrange measures for you to learn German and to start your career.
